John Mayer is launching a label, Sob Rock Records, quitting Columbia in 2022, and has partnered with Mercury Records. The announcement came on Oct. 22, the day before the new single drops. The move follows his 2021 album Sob Rock, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Mayer's first solo single since then, "Tom and Jerry," drops Friday, Oct. 23, just a day after the announcement. He'll also headline a 21-show residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas from April to June 2027. Tyler Arnold, Mercury's chairman and CEO, praised Mayer as "one of the greatest artists of all time." He said the partnership feels "easy and rewarding." Mayer's departure from Columbia in 2022 followed his eighth album, Sob Rock, and he said he didn't renew his contract. The collaboration adds him to Mercury's roster that includes Post Malone, Noah Kahan and Morgan Wallen. Mayer's career has 23 Billboard Hot 100 hits and 15 Billboard 200 entries, including No. 1 albums Heavier Things, Battle Studies and Born and Raised.
