Warhound Raises $200M to Engineer War Dogs

October 22, 2026 · 2 sources

Warhound just secured $200 million to engineer genetically enhanced war dogs for the U.S. military. The startup, co-founded by Colossal Biosciences' Ben Lamm and Anduril's Palmer Luckey, values itself at $1.2 billion. They plan to clone Belgian Malinois, German Shepherds, labs and other top-performing breeds. The gene edits aim to remove hip dysplasia and other health risks. First puppies are slated to arrive in early 2027, though one report says early 2024. Anduril will supply cybernetic augmentations-body armor, sensors and software-to boost situational awareness. The dogs will be trained under American Humane Society guidelines and, upon retirement, could join its re-unification program. Investors include In-Q-Tel, Sequoia Capital, ARK Invest and 8VC, and Colossal owns equity while Luckey has no stake. The venture is led by CEO David Spirk, former DoD data officer, with Lamm on the board. If the plan succeeds, the U.S. could finally end its reliance on European dog breeders for elite military canines.
