NASA Unveils X-70 Fractal Aircraft
November 5, 2026 · 1 source
NASA just announced a crewed X-plane that can carry two thousand pounds of experiments. It will cruise at three-quarters of the speed of sound. The X-70 Fractal was revealed Wednesday at the UP.Summit on Florida's Kennedy Space Center. It weighs ten thousand pounds at takeoff and can climb to forty-five thousand feet. What most people miss is its modular design that lets engineers swap payloads in hours, not months. That flexibility supports a range of about 1,726 miles, roughly 1,500 nautical miles. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the aircraft will let the agency "fly, learn, and move quickly. From one experiment to the next," he added. He expects the first crewed flight within the next two years. Aeronautics Division head Laurie Grindle noted the X-70 continues a legacy from the Bell X-1 onward. If all goes as planned, that first flight will lift off in under two years. That will put the X-70 into active service soon.
