November 1, 2026 · 2 sources
Irish running star Ciara Mageean has died at the age of thirty-four following a battle with cancer. She passed away at half past six on Sunday morning surrounded by her loved ones. The Portaferry native was a two-time Olympian who represented Ireland in both Rio and Tokyo. She also claimed a historic fifteen hundred metre gold medal at the European Championships in Rome in twenty-four. An Achilles injury unfortunately forced her to miss the Paris Olympics later that same year. In May twenty-five, she was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer. She recently married her long-term partner Thomas Moran in a small civil ceremony just weeks before her passing. Tributes quickly poured in from political leaders and sports organisations across Ireland. Athletics Ireland shared they were heartbroken over the loss of the fierce competitor and inspiration.
