WHO Starts Ebola Vaccine Trial in DRC

October 24, 2026 · 2 sources

WHO started a human Ebola vaccine trial in Bunia, Ituri province, to test cross-protection against Bundibugyo. Participants received the approved Ervebo jab and will also be evaluated with Oxford's ChAdOx1 and Moderna's mRNA candidates. The trial uses a ring-vaccination approach, includes pregnant women and children 12 and older, and follows the Tumaini framework. Kenya reports its second Ebola death, a 65-year-old woman who developed symptoms in quarantine. The Ministry says seven cases are in isolation, all linked to a single cluster with no community spread. Kenya traced 135 contacts, confirming nine cases, including the two fatalities. The DRC's 17th outbreak has crossed borders into Nigeria, Uganda and African nations, the widest Ebola spread on the continent.
