Utopai Studios just appointed the Disney exec who brokered a $1 billion OpenAI deal as its new chief product officer. Ku will run product, engineering, research and business development to scale the studio's AI-driven film and TV pipeline. He previously served as Disney's VP of AI & Engineering. There he steered the collaboration that birthed Sora, Disney's short-lived generative video tool. Disney had agreed to license its characters for Sora in exchange for a $1 billion equity investment. The agreement fell apart after Sora was shuttered. Before Disney, Ku built an online tool for traditional animators at Walt Disney Feature Animation. Utopai, founded in 2022, recently raised $60 million at a $1 billion valuation to push AI into mainstream storytelling. CEO Cecilia Shen said Ku knows how to move emerging tech from experiment to global scale. He added the studio will build 'PAI' alongside filmmakers, turning production lessons into better tools while keeping creative decisions in creators' hands.
