Microsoft Adds Markdown to Notepad
October 22, 2026 · 2 sources
Microsoft added Markdown formatting to Notepad in Windows 11, making plain text more useful. The change lets users switch between formatted text and raw Markdown source on the fly. But even with that, opening a .md file still feels like a broken puzzle on most devices. Apple added import/export to Notes in 2024, yet the file turns into rich‑text, not a true Markdown view. Windows 11, Linux, Android, and iOS each have tools, but none provide a consistent native preview. Markdown was invented in 2004 by John Gruber with Aaron Swartz, aiming for plain‑text readability. The hope is every OS will treat .md files as first‑class documents, just like PDFs. If that happens, editing and sharing knowledge will stay simple for decades, no software lock‑in.
