Marty Stratton Says id Software Is Doing Great After Layoffs
October 31, 2026 · 2 sources
Half of id Software was fired just twenty-four hours before shipping its big Doom expansion. Studio co-director Marty Stratton told reporters this week that things are still going great. He claims there was a deliberate effort to keep the studio viable across game development and technology. One veteran programmer called building AAA games with half the staff impossible. The cuts wiped out decades of combined institutional knowledge right before the Xbox reset. Now id Software is collaborating more closely with MachineGames than ever before. Both teams are pooling their remaining engineering sources on id Tech for future projects. More layoffs are reportedly scheduled for November and January as Microsoft finishes its reset.
