Martínez Red Card Sends United Down 2-0

November 1, 2026 · 2 sources

Lisandro Martínez's 83-second spell of chaos handed Chelsea a 2-0 win and left United with ten men. He received two bookable offences in a minute and 23 seconds, first raising an elbow into Wesley Fofana's face. VAR adviser James Bell prompted referee Peter Bankes to review the incident, confirming the red card and a penalty. United had been level at half-time and looked poised to come back when Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea a second-half lead. The dismissal dropped United to 2-0 down and the game never recovered. It also ended a run of three-goal defeats that hadn't happened since 1961. Manager Michael Carrick said he hadn't seen the footage but called the moment 'a big influence' on the result. Former England midfielder Danny Murphy labeled Martínez a liability, saying his mindset "is not right to play". He will miss United's next match against Aston Villa as the suspension kicks in.
