Itch.io Deletes Terabytes Of AI Slop To Fight Spam

November 3, 2026 · 1 source

Itch.io just deleted a couple terabytes of AI-generated game spam after daily uploads doubled in recent months. Game page creation jumped from just over three thousand to above six thousand per day between August third and October thirtieth. Downloads and purchases did not grow with that wave. The company says first-time uploaders drove the surge rather than bulk uploaders. Itch responded by deleting the files and expanding AI disclosure rules to categories like tabletop games, books, comics, and soundtracks. Users must now state if they used artificial intelligence tools, even if they edited the results later. A new user filter lets people hide AI games from search results entirely. Some critics want a total ban on AI content instead of a simple filter. The platform chose moderation and disclosure policies because checking every file for a full ban would cost too much money.
