Hugging Face Unveils Carbon-X DNA Chat Model
October 22, 2026 · 1 source
Hugging Face just released a 14‑billion‑parameter AI that lets you chat with DNA on your laptop. The model, called Carbon‑X, was built with researchers from Zhongguancun Academy in China and the University of Naples Federico II. It blends genomic sequences and natural language, training on 300 billion tokens that mix DNA, English text and biological descriptions. Carbon‑X can answer questions about how specific mutations affect gene activity, helping drug designers and genetic‑therapy researchers. Unlike DeepMind’s AlphaGenome, which returns numeric predictions and needs heavy compute, Carbon‑X runs locally and speaks in plain English. The tool limits input to about 50,000 base pairs and blocks full human genomes to avoid misuse. It also omits viruses from training, a deliberate safety choice by the team. Lewis Tunstall says the open‑source release aims to let non‑technical users explore their own genomes. No data is sent to Hugging Face or any other company. He adds, “We’ve unlocked a new capability in language models, which is fundamentally about being able to chat with DNA.”
