Google reverts Nest thermostats to non-AI 'dumb' mode

Google Cuts Nest Thermostat Support 2025

On Oct. 25, 2025, Google pulled the plug on three old Nest Learning Thermostats. Those first- and second-generation models, each over a decade old, lost all cloud-based features. Remote control, Google Assistant, app status checks, and notifications all vanished overnight. Without the Nest Home servers, even Home/Away Assist and Eco Mode broke. Google offered discount credits for upgrades, but the devices stayed stuck. Yet a DIY project called No Longer Evil can revive them. The open-source firmware restores remote control, scheduling, and auto-away through a web dashboard. Users can either host the server themselves or use the No Longer Evil public servers. This means those Nest thermostats may stay in homes, not landfills. Google's decision underscores that cloud-connected smart devices have a finite lifespan.
