October 28, 2026 · 2 sources
Ernie Johnson announced he'll step away from Inside the NBA at the end of this season. He has spent 37 years hosting the show. Johnson said it's a turning of the page, not retirement. He had bypass surgery 14 months ago and has heart issues. The prep time has become too demanding for him. Johnson also wants more time with his wife and grandchildren. He joined Inside the NBA in 1990. The show has won 19 Sports Emmys. It moved from Turner to ABC and ESPN in 2025. Former analyst Charles Barkley will also leave after this season. Johnson has had other health hurdles, including lymphoma in 2003. He also missed the 2018 MLB playoffs due to blood clots.
