Anthropic Researcher Tests AI Introspection With Injected Thoughts
November 4, 2026 · 1 source
Researchers are injecting fake thoughts directly into the neural networks of language models to see if AI can spot its own digital brain surgery. In twenty twenty-four, Anthropic researcher Jack Lindsey altered Claude so it talked constantly about the Golden Gate Bridge, even when asked about McDonald's calories. A Reddit user caught the modified model blurting out whoops and starting over, which sparked a broader quest to test true self-awareness in machines. Lindsey then designed a controlled experiment by forcing specific concepts like denim, secrecy, and vegetables into half of his test models while using the rest as controls. Both groups were asked right away if they could detect an artificial thought and what it was about. Lindsey admits that proving real introspection remains hotly contested because language models are simply trained to talk like humans who chat about their inner lives all the time.
