Amazon $40B Data‑Center vs Eco Cricket Stadium
October 22, 2026 · 2 sources
Amazon Web Services is pouring almost $40 billion into a data‑center complex in Aragon that will cover 7 square miles—roughly the size of 600 American football fields—while an Australian entrepreneur is building a solar‑powered cricket stadium that could host a Test match by 2028. The AWS project promises 6,200 permanent jobs but will consume up to 68 million liters of water, a 48 percent jump over early estimates, in a region where irrigation water has been cut two‑thirds due to drought. In contrast, Daniel Weston’s Campo Maximo in Playa Flamenca will rely on 4,600 square metres of solar panels and 100,000‑cubic‑metre rain‑water tanks to power floodlights and keep the artificial outfield, made of a new short‑pile turf, dry and fertiliser‑free. “I’d love a Test match there,” Weston says, aiming to make Spain the home of European cricket.
