Scorsese Blames Seth Rogen for Cleopatra Collapse
October 31, 2026 · 1 source
Martin Scorsese blames Seth Rogen's 2014 comedy for killing his planned Cleopatra movie. The director said the North Korean hack that followed The Interview blew up everyone at Columbia and scrapped the project. He recalled that Angelina Jolie was set to star as Cleopatra VII and the script was ready. Scorsese shared the story with his daughter Francesca during Tribeca's Crafty interview, calling the hack a 'digital attack'. He added that Kim Jong Un "doesn't have a sense of humor," which he says ruined everything. The Interview, co-written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg, featured a fake sit-down with Kim Jong Un and sparked the cyber retaliation. Scorsese later played himself in the debut episode of Rogen's Apple TV series The Studio, showing they've moved on. He joked that if Matt Remick, Rogen's fictional studio head, caused the Cleopatra cancellation, it's life imitating art.
