CEOs Demand AI-Savvy CHROs, Only 25% Ready

October 26, 2026 · 2 sources

Only one in four CHROs can claim to be true "enterprise CHROs" capable of AI-driven workforce design. CEOs now demand nearly twice as many skills from their HR chiefs than they did a decade ago. A Heidrick & Struggles study shows fewer than five percent of current CHROs have backgrounds in strategy consulting. None of them come from product or engineering, the fields CEOs now prize for AI transformation. OpenAI recently named Arvind KC, a former Palantir CIO and ex-Google engineering VP, as its chief people officer. Anthropic followed suit, hiring Hannah Pritchett, formerly of Stripe product operations, for the same role. Enterprise CHROs now log an extra ten hours each month working directly with CTOs on AI rollout. Brad Warga advises CHROs to embed product and engineering talent in HR teams to gain hands-on AI fluency. He adds that a Sunday afternoon with a language model can teach a CHRO more than a formal course. "This is a major shift," Warga says, "it's about adoption versus compliance."
