Canada and EU Finalize New Alliance for the Future
October 30, 2026 · 2 sources
Canada just joined forces with the European Union to build a massive new alliance against unpredictable global politics. Prime Minister Mark Carney and EU chief Ursula von der Leyen announced the deal in Montreal on Friday. They called it the Alliance for the Future to help stabilize their shaken societies. Canada also agreed to chip in on a ninety billion euro support loan for Ukraine. But here is the catch. The push for new partners comes as Canada tries to cut back its heavy reliance on American tech and defence. Last month, Elon Musk throttled Starlink speeds over Ukraine and disrupted military operations. Canada is now buying a stake in the AI firm Cohere worth up to one billion six hundred million dollars. They are also joining Europe supercomputing network to train their own models. The leaders want Canada to become an associate member of the bloc. Some EU states fought against that label behind the scenes. A clearer scope for the role will not arrive until a summit in twenty twenty seven. Meanwhile, Quebec premier Paul St-Pierre Plamondon skipped the event after Ottawa blocked him from speaking publicly.
