Apple Launches Security Research Device for iOS Testing

October 24, 2026 · 1 source

Apple just released a fused iPhone that lets researchers probe iOS without ever cracking its locks. The device, called the Security Research Device, comes pre-installed with shell access and full-system tooling. You can run any debugging tools, pick your own entitlements, and even modify the kernel. Apple Pay and third-party apps are the only parts off-limits for SRD research. Researchers also get early access to software previews, security beta programs, and a dedicated community forum. Any bug you uncover is automatically entered into Apple's Security Bounty program, with extra bonuses for preview and beta findings. Apple says the SRD lets you report vulnerabilities confidently, because you never lose access to iOS's inner layers. The move aims to boost third-party research and tighten the iPhone's defenses before new iOS releases hit the market.
